Updating Display Image and Display Name
Steps to change/update profile image and profile name
Path: Profile >> Settings >> Profile Information
What are Display Name and Display Image?
---
Display Name and Display Image are personal profile elements that help identify a member across their community and appear alongside their ideas, comments, and other activity.
Both elements are managed from the member's own Profile Information settings and can be updated at any time, subject to the community's SSO and upload configuration.
Role Permissions
- Member: Can update their own Display Name and Display Image from Profile Information settings, subject to the conditions listed in Exceptions.
- Workspace Administrator: Can enable or disable the Allow Members to Upload Profile Pictures setting, which controls whether members can upload a custom Display Image.
Changing Display Name
Display Name is the name generated from a member's first and last names, and it is the name shown on the member's Profile page. To update it, select Profile >> Settings >> Profile Information, then edit the name or username fields and save the changes.

Note: By default, a member's profile name is taken from their email address until changed manually.
See Exceptions below for restrictions that apply to SSO-enabled communities.
Changing Display Image
To change the Display Image, select the profile name to open the Profile page. See Exceptions below for conditions that may restrict this option.

Uploading a New Display Image
A new Display Image can be uploaded directly from the Profile page by selecting the pencil icon beside the current image. See Exceptions below for file type and permission restrictions that apply to this upload.

Gravatar Integration
IdeaScale integrates with Gravatar, a global avatar provider. If a member's email address is linked to a Gravatar account, that avatar automatically populates as the member's Display Image in IdeaScale. This default avatar can be changed at any time from the Profile page.
Exceptions
- SSO-Enabled Communities (Display Name): For Single Sign-On (SSO) enabled communities, the ability to change the Display Name depends on whether this capability is enabled by the SSO provider.
- SSO-Enabled Communities (Display Image): For SSO-enabled communities where the SSO provider does not supply an avatar image, members can upload or change their own Display Image. Where the SSO provider does supply an avatar image, IdeaScale uses the supplied image, and members cannot change it.
- Unsupported File Type: SVG image files are not supported for Display Image uploads.
- Disabled Profile Picture Uploads: When the Allow Members to Upload Profile Pictures setting is disabled by a Community Administrator (TO BE VERIFIED), members cannot upload a new Display Image.
- Multi-Community Membership: If a member belongs to multiple communities and one of those communities has the Allow Members to Upload Profile Pictures setting disabled, that member cannot upload a Display Image in any of their other communities either.
- Hide My Identity: If a member has opted for Hidden Identity for any community, their Display Name will be replaced with 'Community Member' and the Display Image will be hidden from other members.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Display Name always editable?
Not always. In SSO-enabled communities, the ability to change the Display Name depends on whether this capability is enabled by the SSO provider.
What happens if a member's email address is linked to a Gravatar account?
The Gravatar avatar automatically populates as the member's Display Image in IdeaScale. It can still be changed at any time from the Profile page, subject to the SSO and upload conditions covered in Exceptions.
Can every member upload a custom Display Image?
Not necessarily. A Workspace Administrator can disable the Settings >> Workspace >> Workspace Info >> Miscellaneous >> Allow Members to Upload Profile Pictures setting, which removes this ability for all members in that Workspace.
What is the default Display Name if a member has not changed it?
By default, the profile name is taken from the member's email address until changed manually.
Are all image file types supported for a Display Image upload?
No. SVG image files are not supported for Display Image uploads.
