IdeaScale Security SSL/TLS
What is SSL/TLS?
---
SSL/TLS refers to the encryption protocols IdeaScale uses to secure communications between browsers, email systems, and IdeaScale's servers, protecting data such as passwords, uploads, and other sensitive information while in transit.
IdeaScale secures communications across the platform using SSL and TLS encryption. Encryption is applied automatically to website access, outgoing email, and file uploads, with an additional option for communities on a Custom Domain, available on the Enterprise subscription.
Role Permissions
- Workspace Administrator: Standard SSL/TLS encryption for website access, email communication, and data uploads is applied automatically and requires no configuration. Contacts IdeaScale Sales to request SSL configuration for a Custom Domain community.

Frequently Asked Questions
SSL Setup
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) establishes a secure connection between internet browsers and websites, allowing private data to be transmitted securely online. A website secured with SSL displays a padlock icon before the URL in the browser's address bar.
Note: SSL is mandatory for all workspaces and is applied automatically; no configuration is required.
Encrypted Email Communication
IdeaScale's email servers are configured with SSL/TLS. TLS (Transport Layer Security) allows email exchanged between systems to be encrypted, minimizing the chances of snooping. Emails sent by IdeaScale — including new idea notifications and login emails — are delivered through mail servers configured to support TLS, provided the receiving mail system also supports TLS. Most modern inbound mail systems support TLS by default; confirming this with the receiving organization's IT department is recommended when in doubt.
IdeaScale supports the following SSL and TLS versions:
- SSL 2.0 and 3.0
- TLS 1.2 and 1.3
Encrypted Data Transfers
Logging into IdeaScale should be done using the secured link (https://ideascale.com/). Use of this secured link ensures all communication between the browser and IdeaScale's servers is encrypted, including uploads such as Excel files and other documents. The "https://" prefix confirms that uploaded sensitive data — such as employee email addresses or documents — is encrypted and follows established security protocols.
SSL For Custom Domains
SSL configuration for Custom Domain communities is available only on the Enterprise subscription. See Exceptions below.

Exceptions
- Custom Domain SSL: SSL for Custom Domain communities is available only to communities on the Enterprise subscription. Contact Sales for configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SSL required for all IdeaScale communities?
Yes. SSL is mandatory for all communities and is applied automatically without requiring separate configuration.
Does encryption apply to every email IdeaScale sends?
TLS encryption is applied by IdeaScale's mail servers to outgoing email, but full encryption also depends on the receiving mail system supporting TLS. Most modern inbound mail systems support TLS by default.
Which SSL and TLS versions does IdeaScale support?
SSL 2.0 and 3.0, along with TLS 1.2 and 1.3, are the supported versions. (TO BE VERIFIED — confirm this list reflects currently supported protocol versions.)
Does the secured login link encrypt file uploads?
Yes. Using the secured link (https://ideascale.com/) ensures uploads, including Excel files and other documents, are encrypted along with all other communication between the browser and IdeaScale's servers.
Can SSL be configured for a Custom Domain on any subscription plan?
No. SSL for Custom Domain communities is available only on the Enterprise subscription. See Exceptions above.
