Disney Creative Strategy

An IdeaScale Whiteboard facilitator guide for Disney Creative Strategy

This IdeaScale Whiteboard will be our collaborative space for applying the Disney Creative Strategy. We'll use its features to move through the Dreamer, Realist, and Spoiler mindsets, capturing and refining ideas at each stage.

Brainstorming Objectives:

  • To apply the Disney Creative Strategy (Dreamer, Realist, Spoiler) to generate innovative ideas or solve problems.
  • To encourage diverse thinking and challenge assumptions.
  • To develop well-rounded and actionable plans.
  • To use the whiteboard to visually represent the different stages of the strategy.

Tips for Facilitators

Introduction (15 minutes)

  • Welcome participants and introduce the Disney Creative Strategy.
  • Explain the three distinct roles:
    • Dreamer: Focuses on imagination, possibilities, and blue-sky thinking.
    • Realist: Analyzes ideas practically, considering implementation and feasibility.
    • Spoiler (or Critic): Identifies potential problems, challenges, and obstacles.
  • Emphasize the importance of moving through each stage sequentially and respecting each role.
  • Explain how to use the digital sticky notes and whiteboard sections to represent each stage.
  • Clearly define the problem, challenge, or opportunity that will be addressed.

Brainstorming Instructions (60 minutes)

  • Activity 1: The Dreamer Phase (20 minutes):
    • Instruct participants to adopt the "Dreamer" mindset.
    • Encourage them to generate as many ideas as possible, without judgment or limitations.
    • Use digital sticky notes to capture these ideas in a designated "Dreamer" section of the whiteboard.
    • Promote a free-flowing and imaginative environment.

  • Activity 2: The Realist Phase (20 minutes):
    •  Shift the focus to the "Realist" mindset.
    • Have participants review the "Dreamer" ideas and analyze their feasibility, practicality, and potential implementation.
    • Use different colored sticky notes (or move existing ones) to add realist considerations, action plans, and potential steps for each idea.
    • Create a "Realist" section on the whiteboard to organize these additions.

  • Activity 3: The Spoiler Phase (20 minutes):
    • Transition to the "Spoiler" (or Critic) mindset.
    • Ask participants to identify potential problems, challenges, risks, and obstacles associated with the ideas and plans.
    • Use a different color of sticky notes (or move/annotate existing ones) to capture these concerns in a "Spoiler" section of the whiteboard.
    • Encourage constructive criticism and thorough analysis.

Adjourn (15 minutes)

  • Summarize the refined ideas and plans, incorporating insights from all three phases.
  • Discuss next steps for further development or implementation.
  • Capture the final whiteboard and distribute it to participants.
  • Thank participants for their contributions.
