Custom Domains setup

Settings custom URL/domain for the workspace community

Path: Workspace Homepage >> Navigation Panel >> Settings >> Workspace >> Workspace Configuration >> Workspace Info >> Custom Domain

What is a Custom Domain?
A Custom Domain replaces the default "ideascale.com" URL with a domain the organization owns (for example, ideas.mycompany.com) for all communities within a Workspace.

Custom Domain is available to Workspaces on the Enterprise subscription. Configuring a Custom Domain requires the Workspace Administrator to add and modify DNS settings for the organization's domain; IdeaScale Technical Support cannot configure DNS on the organization's behalf. A Custom Domain is set at the Workspace level and applies to every community within the Workspace.

Role Permissions

  1. Workspace Administrator: Adds and modifies the DNS records required for the Custom Domain and sets the Custom Domain field in Workspace Configuration.

CNAME DNS Record Setup

The Workspace Administrator adds a CNAME DNS Record to the organization's existing domain and points it to the appropriate regional IdeaScale server. Only a CNAME Record Type is supported; an A Record cannot be used.

  1. Region US (ideascale.com): CNAME target app.ideascale.net
  2. Region EU (ideascaleapp.eu): CNAME target app-eu.ideascale.net
  3. Region PE (ideascaleapp.com): CNAME target app-pe.ideascale.net
  4. Region AU (ideascale.com.au): CNAME target app-au.ideascale.net
  5. Region ISG (ideascalegov.com): CNAME target app-isg.ideascale.net
  6. Region AE (ideascale.ae): CNAME target app-ae.ideascale.net

If the Workspace Administrator is unsure of the Workspace's region, the Account Manager can confirm it.

After the CNAME Record is added, the Workspace Administrator confirms that the address resolves correctly — for example, by pinging the custom URL (ideas.mycompany.com) to verify it resolves to the same IP address as app.ideascale.net. See Exceptions below for how DNS propagation timing affects this step.

Custom Domain Configuration

Once the CNAME DNS Record has been added and resolves correctly, the Workspace Administrator sets the Custom Domain field in Workspace Configuration >> Workspace Info

389

YThe Custom Domain can be configured without "WWW" by redirecting https://mycompany.com to https://www.mycompany.com.

SSL for Custom Domains

SSL for Custom Domains is available only to Enterprise subscription holders using a Custom Domain. The organization provides IdeaScale with its own SSL certificate and must control the DNS settings needed to create a CNAME record.

Contact IdeaScale's Sales Department for more information.

Exceptions

  1. DNS changes have just been made: The Custom Domain will not resolve or display until the DNS changes propagate, which can take up to 24 hours.
  2. Workspace Administrator lacks DNS access: The Workspace Administrator contacts the organization's internal IT staff or system administrator; IdeaScale Technical Support cannot configure DNS on the organization's behalf.
