| Profanity Filtering is a feature within the Blocklist section of Access Control settings that blocks abusive words and restricts inappropriate keywords or emojis from being used within the workspace. |
Profanity Filtering blocks certain abusive words and restricts keywords or emojis that could be used inappropriately in the workspace. The Workspace Administrator maintains a list of blocked words and emojis to prevent members from using them.
Role Permissions
- Workspace Administrator: Manages Profanity Filtering settings, including the default blocklist, Keyword Filtering entries, and Emoji Filtering restrictions.
- All Roles (Administrators, Moderators & Members): Cannot use the blocked words & emojis in Ideas or comments.

Default Profanity Blocklist
IdeaScale maintains a default list of seven blocklisted words. Use of any of these words automatically blocks the associated idea, comment, or member name. This default filtering also extends to tags, labels, idea attachment notes, and assessment notes.
If a member attempts to submit an idea containing a word from the default blocklist, the idea submission form displays a message and the idea is not submitted until the flagged word is removed.
Keyword Filtering
The Workspace Administrator can enter additional words, beyond the default list, as profanity in the text field provided in the Keyword Filtering section. A word entered here does not automatically block idea submission; instead, the idea moves into a pending approval state for the Community Moderator to review.
Additional Words: Enter one per line in the Keyword Filtering text field.

Emoji Filtering
Inappropriate emojis can be restricted by adding them to the Emoji Filtering section and selecting Save Changes.
Exceptions
- Non-English Profanity: The default blocklist covers only the seven built-in words in English; equivalent words translated into another language are not automatically detected. The Workspace Administrator must manually add each translated word through the Keyword Filtering text field to block it.
