Power BI Integration

An Overview Of Power BI Integration

Path: Workspace Homepage >> Navigation Panel >> Settings >> Community >> Integrations >> All Apps >> Power BI

What is Power BI Integration?
Power BI Integration is a Microsoft-recommended, secured connector that lets a Community Administrator build custom dashboards and visual reports from IdeaScale community data using Microsoft Power BI Desktop.

Power BI is a business analytics tool created by Microsoft. Once the connector is enabled in the IdeaScale community's All Apps and the Power BI Desktop setup file is installed, a Community Administrator can create custom visual charts and dashboards from live IdeaScale community data. The connector can be installed only on Microsoft machines and works with the Power BI Desktop app.

Setting Up Power BI Integration

Completing Power BI setup and using the connector involves two parts:

  1. Enabling Power BI Integration from the IdeaScale community's All Apps.
  2. Installing the Power BI setup file provided by Microsoft.

Prerequisites

  1. Community Administrator Permission: Before signing in to IdeaScale Analytics (Beta), the Community Administrator must have an IdeaScale account with administrator permissions within the IdeaScale community in order to install the connector and pull data.
  2. Sharing Permission: To publish a Power BI report with other members, the Community Administrator must have administrator permission to share reports.

Note: Power BI cannot be installed on Apple/ Mac.

Benefits of Power BI Integration

  1. No Initial License Required: A Power BI license is not required to create custom visuals in Power BI Desktop. Power BI Desktop can be downloaded and installed on a Microsoft machine directly from the Power BI website (TO BE LINKED).
  2. External Data Support: In addition to live IdeaScale community data, external data can be loaded using an Excel file.
  3. License Required Only to Publish: A Power BI license is required only when the completed report is ready to be published, so that the Community Administrator can log in with active Power BI credentials and publish the report to peers who already have a Power BI account.
