What is General Info?
General Info is the section of Community Configuration where basic community details — including the community name, community key, community URL, description, and privacy setting — are configured.

The community key and community URL are established at creation and cannot be edited from the admin interface, while the community name, description, and privacy setting can be updated at any time.

Role Permissions

  1. Community Administrator: Views and edits the community name, description, and privacy setting. Cannot edit the community key or community URL directly; a request must be submitted to IdeaScale Support to change either value.

Community Name

The community name identifies the community wherever it is referenced across the workspace, including in community email notifications. It can be changed at any point and must be within 28 characters.

Community Key & Community URL

The community key and community URL are defined when the community is first created and function as unique identifiers for the community. Because of this, neither value can be edited later from the admin interface. See Exceptions below for how a change can be requested.

Community Description

The community description functions as a tagline or supporting sentence displayed below the community name on the homepage. It supports rich text formatting and must be within 240 characters.

Community Privacy

The Community Privacy setting determines who can see and access the community. Three options are available:

  1. Public: A Public community is fully open and discoverable. Both members and non-members can view the community, all workspace members can find and join it from the Workspace Homepage, non-logged-in users can see it on the login page, and the community can be indexed by external search engines.
  2. Private: A Private community is restricted to approved members only. The community and its content are visible only to members who have been added to it. It does not appear to non-members on the Workspace Homepage and is not shown on the Workspace login page.
  3. Private & Joinable: A Private & Joinable community combines restricted content access with broader visibility. Only members can see the community's content, but all workspace members can see the community listed on the Workspace Homepage and can request access by selecting the Join Community option.

Exceptions

  1. Community Key or Community URL Change: Because both values function as unique identifiers set at community creation, neither can be edited from the admin interface. To request a change, the Community Administrator must submit a request to IdeaScale Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the community key or community URL be changed after the community is created?

Not directly from the admin interface. A request must be submitted to IdeaScale Support to update either value. See Exceptions above.

Does changing the community name affect past email notifications?

No the past email notifications will not be affected with this updation.

What is the difference between a Private community and a Private & Joinable community?

A Private community is hidden from non-members entirely — it does not appear on the Workspace Homepage or login page. A Private & Joinable community keeps content restricted to members, but still lists the community on the Workspace Homepage so non-members can discover it and request to join.
